Il mio incontro con Mark Lawrence non era stato dei migliori, i suoi primi romanzi, Il Principe dei Fulmini e Il Re dei Fulmini non mi erano proprio piaciuti (L'Imperatore dei Fulmini non l'ho mai letto), non tanto per la trama, che pure aveva i suoi difetti, ma principalmente per il suo stile narrativo. Dopo molti anni, ho visto che Lawrence continua ad essere apprezzato, e ho allora deciso di provare a leggere nuovamente qualcosa di suo, evitando però il seguito di quella prima trilogia che non mi era piaciuta. E quindi ho letto Red Sister, il primo romanzo di una trilogia indipendente, Book of the Ancestor, e quello che ho letto mi è piaciuto abbastanza da continuare la lettura dell'intera trilogia. La scrittura di Lawrence si è molto arricchita, perdendo l'aspetto di scenografia per un film che aveva all'inizio e acquistando complessità nei dialoghi e nelle descrizioni, diciamo è diventata la scrittura di un romanziere.
La trama di questa trilogia presenta molti stereotipi e situazioni viste e riviste nei romanzi fantasy, a cominciare dalla scuola per imparare ad essere qualcosa di superiore, con poteri fuori dell'ordinario, che una ignara ragazzina deve attraversare, con amicizie (poche) e inimicizie (tante), fino a diventare la più forte di tutte. Onestamente nella logica delle interazioni tra i personaggi Lawrence non brilla per originalità, ed alcuni colpi di scena sono ampiamente prevedibili, ma l'ambientazione è invece davvero splendida: un pianeta di un sole ormai morente, quasi completamente coperto di neve e ghiaccio tranne una stretta fascia equatoriale scaldata dalla radiazione concentrata di un enorme specchio orbitale, costruito e istallato prima del degrado attuale del livello scientifico della società, ma i cui controlli sono stati dimenticati. In questa fascia temperata in lento ma continuo restringimento sopravvive a fatica un Impero schiacciato da forze diverse che premono ai suoi confini, con solo la forza delle Sorelle a contrastarle, ma indebolita da trame politiche interne.
Come detto, la trama non offre molti spunti originali, e le ragazzine esili che combattono con forza e velocità sovraumane hanno ormai saturato il mondo fantasy, ma la trilogia si legge in modo scorrevole, ha una sua logica accettabile e la prosa di Lawrence è decisamente maturata, per cui mi sento davvero di consigliarne la lettura, pur avvertendo di non aspettarsi sorprese particolari.
