The Wonder Engine never lets us forget our funny, broken group even as the action propels our heroes to new highs and lows. It shows that making the most of the rest of your life can be rewarding--no matter how many mechanical abominations you need to destroy to get there.
Sono capitato quasi per caso su questi romanzi, o meglio, per la nomination del secondo al Locus Award 2019, ma è stato l'alto punteggio di entrambi su Goodreads (4.23 e 4.32 rispettivamente) che mi ha alla fine spinto a leggerli, e ne sono proprio contento.
Due romanzi difficili da classificare: una base di Grimdark Fantasy con una leggerissima spruzzata di Steampunk, e una solida ironia di scrittura. Mostri, demoni e magie varie abbondano.
La vicenda non parte in modo particolarmente originale: quattro persone estremamente eterogenee si trovano costrette a collaborare per una missione praticamente impossibile, ma già i quattro protagonisti si presentano bene. Ad una falsaria e ladra esperta, perseguitata anche da un tocco di magia che si esprime come una violenta allergia al profumo di prezzemolo, accompagnata dal suo compare e difensore, nonché precedente amante ed esperto assassino, si vengono ad unire un intrepido ed aitante Paladino, molto esperto nell'eliminare demoni, e anche chi è posseduto dagli stessi demoni, che ha compiuto la leggerezza di farsi possedere a sua volta da un demone e quindi compiere azioni biasimevoli. Ucciso ma non eliminato il suddetto demone, è stato condannato alla reclusione perenne, da cui viene liberato solo per dover partecipare a questa operazione suicida. Completa il quartetto un giovane ed entusiasta studioso, molto ingenuo e del tutto ignaro delle complicazioni del mondo reale, specialmente del genere femminile, ma estremamente colto e competente.
I quattro sono mandati a scoprire, e possibilmente distruggere, l'origine di una armata di inarrestabili centauri neccanici che stanno distruggendo il paese avvicinandosi sempre più alla capitale.
La storia presenta qualche soluzione un po' troppo "di comodo", ma in complesso è logica, magia compresa, e sufficientemente complessa.
Il finale è soddisfacente e giustificato, lasciando un buon "retrogusto" nella memoria. Lo stile narrativo ironico e disinvolto rende la lettura gradevole e molto scorrevole, per cui, anche se siamo molto lontani da capolavori di letteratura, li consiglio davvero.
