It has been twenty years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs—once thought of almost as gods—were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets. A representation of these laws is now written into the flesh of any who use the Gift, forcing those so marked into absolute obedience.
As a student of the Gifted, Davian suffers the consequences of a war fought—and lost—before he was born. Despised by most beyond the school walls, he and those around him are all but prisoners as they attempt to learn control of the Gift. Worse, as Davian struggles with his lessons, he knows that there is further to fall if he cannot pass his final tests.

In the wake of the devastating attack on Ilin Illan, an amnesty has been declared for all Augurs - finally allowing them to emerge from hiding and openly oppose the dark forces massing against Andarra. However as Davian and his new allies hurry north toward the ever-weakening Boundary, fresh horrors along their path suggest that their reprieve may have come far too late.
In the capital, Wirr is forced to contend with assassins and an increasingly hostile Administration as he controversially assumes the mantle of Northwarden, uncovering a mystery that draws into question everything commonly believed about the rebellion his father led twenty years ago. Meanwhile, Asha begins a secret investigation into the disappearance of the Shadows, determined to discover not only where they went but the origin of the Vessels that created them - and, ultimately, a cure.
And with time against him as he races to fulfill the treacherous bargain with the Lyth, Caeden continues to wrestle with the impossibly heavy burdens of his past. Yet as more and more of his memories return, he begins to realise that the motivations of the two sides in this ancient war may not be as clear-cut as they first seemed...

The Boundary is whole once again, but it may be too late.
Banes now stalk Andarra, while in Ilin Illan, the political machinations of a generation come to a head as Wirr's newfound ability forces his family's old enemies into action.
Imprisoned and alone in a strange land, Davian is pitted against the remaining Venerate as they work tirelessly to undo Asha's sacrifice - even as he struggles with what he has learned about the friend he chose to set free.
And Caeden, now facing the consequences of his centuries-old plan, must finally confront its reality - heartbroken at how it began, and devastated by how it must end.

Un esordiente, e ancora un australiano, continente da cui stanno emergendo un gran numero di nuovi scrittori di Fantascienza e Fantasy, che ha inizialmente autopubblicato il suo primo volume e ha poi avuto un contratto con Orbit per l'intera trilogia. Al pari di tutti gli esordienti ha inevitabilmente i soliti difetti di ingenuità e di eccessiva presunzione, cui si accompagnano però i pregi di di un grande entusiasmo, accompagnato ad una decisa inventiva e qualche innovazione, che lo hanno fatto emergere molto meritatamente.
Da parte mia questa trilogia è davvero piaciuta, ed infatti ne invito la lettura, ma come ho detto, non ci sono solo aspetti positivi. Ad esempio la trama inizia non proprio in modo originale: tre amici che seguono una scuola di magia sono vittime di una tragedia e vengono separati dagli eventi, ma conservano la loro amicizia nel corso dell'intera vicenda, e la loro amicizia avrà enorme importanza per la soluzione finale. In molti altri momenti della storia si incontrano stereotipi piuttosto comuni nel genere, ma nel complesso la trama si svolge anche con alcuni aspetti originali e con una notevole complessità, cosa non facile da trovare tra gli esordienti, e che è uno dei meriti maggiori di questa storia perché è molto ben controllata dall'autore.
Normalmente in questi commenti non dò molte informazioni sulla trama stessa, dato che non sono delle vere recensioni, ma solo degli inviti alla lettura con qualche ragione, spesso personale, a supporto, e in questo caso mi è ancora più difficile, perché il mistero di questo mondo, dei suoi conflitti e anche chi sta davvero con chi e per ottenere cosa, si scoprono poco alla volta, e non sarebbe corretto togliere la sorpresa al lettore.
Mi sento solo di dire che ci sono evoluzioni temporali molto ben gestite, senza (troppe) incongruenze, e il finale è risolto con molta intelligenza. Il tipo di magia è abbastanza standard, con qualche tocco di originalità. I personaggi principali sono ben caratterizzati, con un'evoluzione credibile e con alcune complessità molto ben sviluppate.
Al momento in cui scrivo queste note, ho saputo che ci sarà un'edizione italiana, e quindi molte più persone potranno leggere questi romanzi che, ripeto, non sono capolavori ma "solo" molto piacevoli.
